Extract from a letter to Graham Atkinson on 20th May 2004:

We found that there are many new splits in the chest which are currently being treated with plugs and glue. The bad news is that, as I predicted and notified to you when you visited, when the sun shines the temperature inside the lorry rises and the relative humidity lowers to serious levels. I installed a max/min thermometer and a hygrometer for monitoring. My findings were nothing short of alarming, as the following chart shows:

Time/place

Temp °F/C

% Humidity

10:00 outside (shade)

56/13

65

11:00 inside lorry

82/28

42

15:15 inside lorry

91/33

32

Within the same 24-hour period the maximum/minimum temperatures were 98 and 48°F (37 and 9°C).
Projecting the humidity levels both ways we get:
a relative humidity of 23% at 98°F, and 70% at 48°F.
The low figure is simply unacceptable. If the organ was to be re-installed into this lorry as it is, it would be seriously damaged in a very short space of time in hot weather.

In these conditions I cannot guarantee my workmanship, and leads me to state that I will refuse to re-install the main chest in the organ until major remedial work is done to the lorry.

When I had not received any positive response to the last statement after a few weeks, I decided to continue outside the lorry.
